EPS Fellows

EPS Fellowship recognizes exceptional contributions to physics in research, industry, education, or service to the European Physical Society (EPS). Limited to 5% of EPS members, Fellows are nominated by peers and approved by the Council based on demonstrated impact in their field.

A person holding this Distinction shall be entitled to add ‘EPS Fellow’ to his/her title, and use the designation ‘EPS Fellow’ on business cards, letterhead, etc. 

Who is eligible ?

  • Individuals whose achievements in physics, whether in research, industry or education and/or through commitment to the SOCIETY warrant specific recognition are eligible to become EPS Fellows.
  • Examples of such achievements may be:
    • Research: An outstanding publication and/or EPS conference presentation record. A remarkable discovery or an outstanding contribution to a field of physics.
    • Industry: Development of a new instrument of broad use in the physics community. An outstanding invention. Development of innovative software of broad use. A major role in establishing or running a physics-based business.
    • Education: An outstanding contribution to physics education is teaching, examining and/or establishing new curricula. Authorship of physics textbooks or other education material of broad use. Outstanding achievements in outreach of physics to young people.
    • Society: Substantial service to the EPS over a number of years in a variety of roles.
  • No one will be denied EPS Fellowship on the grounds of nationality, sex or religious beliefs.
  • Normally only those individuals who have been Individual Members of the EPS for at least five years are eligible as EPS Fellows. However, exceptions will be made for those who have made significant contributions to the running of the EPS.

How to nominate ?

  • Only EPS Members (Individual Members, Member Societies and Associate Members) may make nominations for EPS Fellows.
  • No person can be nominated while that person is a member of the Executive Committee.
  • No person may make a nomination while a member of the Executive Committee.
  • No self-nominations will be accepted.
  • All nominations must be accompanied by the following documentation:
    • Support letters from at least three EPS Members, including the principal nominator. These support letters should not all come from the same country nor from the same institution.
    • A CV of the proposed Fellow.
    • A brief description (maximum one A4 page) describing why the individual deserves to become an EPS Fellow. This should include the achievements in research, industry, education and/or service to the physics community or the SOCIETY that justify the nomination.
    • A short citation.

Key Dates

  • Nominations may be made at any time. Nominations must normally be received no later than 31 January of the year of the Council meeting that will decide on the Fellows to be admitted that year.
