Nuclear Physics Division

The Nuclear Physics Division recognises outstanding achievements with three prestigious awards. 

For outstanding work in the fields of experimental, theoretical, or applied nuclear science.

Overview

  • The Prize consist of a diploma, a medal with the image of Lise Meitner, and cash reward.


Eligibility

  • The prize can be given to one or several individuals.
  • Such contributions may comprise experimental nuclear physics, theoretical nuclear physics and all areas of application of nuclear science.  The board welcomes proposals which represent the breadth and the strength of European nuclear science.  
  • Only work that has been published in peer-reviewed journals can be considered in the evaluation of nominations.
  • The Prize shall be awarded without restrictions of nationality, sex, race, or religion.
  • Self-nominations shall not be accepted.
  •  

Nomination Process

  • Call for nominations will be published on EPS website.
  • Nominations should be accompanied by a complete nomination form, a short description of the achievements of the nominee(s), a brief curriculum vitae of the nominee(s), a list of major publications and eventually letters of support from authorities in the field.
  • Self-nominations shall not be accepted.
  • The final recommendation of the NPD board and a report should be submitted for ratification to the Executive Committee of EPS.

 

Key Dates

  • The Prize is awarded every 2 years.
  • The call for nominations for the the 2024 Lise Meitner prize is now closed.
  • The winner(s) will present the work and will be awarded during the European Nuclear Physics Conference (EuNPC 2025), which will be held in Caen (France) from September 22nd to 26th, 2025 

For outstanding work in the field of nuclear science and medicine.

Overview

  • The Applied Nuclear Physics Prize replaces the former IBA-Europhysics Prize since 2024.
  • The prize consists of a diploma and 3,000 €
  • The Prize will be awarded every three years and timed so that it can be presented at the division-supported Applied Nuclear Physics conference.

 

Eligibility

  • The Prize shall be awarded to one or more researchers.
  • The Prize shall be awarded without restrictions of nationality, sex, race or religion.
  • Self-nominations for the award shall not be accepted.
  •  

Nomination Process

  • The board of the EPS Nuclear Physics Division shall request nominations for the Prize from EPS members and members of the board will actively seek nominations from a broad cross-section of the scientific community.
  • Nominations should comprise:
    • A short citation (max. 50 words), describing succinctly the achievements of the nominee and the reasons for making this award. The award citation will be based on the words provided.

    • A detailed statement of the nominee’s major scientific achievements (max. 2 pages)

    • The nominee’s CV (max. 1 page)

    • A maximum of two letters of support from renowned personalities of the field, underscoring the relevance of the scientific work of the nominee.

Key Dates

  • The previous award was presented during the Award Session of the Second Applied Nuclear Physics Conference (ANPC2024) of the EPS Nuclear Physics Division, held in Thessaloniki, Greece from September 23-  27, 2024.

To recognize the excellency of a recent PhD in Nuclear Physics.

Overview

  • The prize winner receives a diploma and support to a maximum value of 1000 € to attend the upcoming EuNPC Conference and present their work.
  • The prize is given every 3 years to 3 candidates.

 

Eligibility

  • Nominations are open to those having obtained a PhD degree in experimental, theoretical, or applied nuclear physics, in a member country of the EPS.
  • The PhD must have been defended within the three-year period since the previous award.

 

Nomination Process

  • Applications shall be reviewed by a Prize Committee appointed by the NPD board. The Committee shall consider each of the eligible applications and shall make recommendations to the NPD board, taking into account eventual reports of referees who are not members of the Board.
  • The Prize shall be awarded without restrictions of nationality, sex, race or religion.
  • Call for applications will be published on EPS website.
  • Applications should include in one pdf file:
    • Candidate’s CV
    • A copy of the PhD diploma indicating the date it was obtained.
    • A short summary (4 pages) of the Thesis, written in English, and an accessible link to an electronic copy of the full Thesis, as well as links to any publication directly related to the candidate’s PhD studies.
    • A letter of support (max. 1 pages) from the candidate’s thesis advisor.
    • Two additional letters of support (max. 1 page each) from physicists who are familiar with the candidate and the research. 

 

Key Dates

  • The previous prize was awarded for years 2018-2021. 

  • The winners of the PhD Prize were presented with diplomas on the final day of the 5th European Nuclear Physics Conference EuNPC (October 24-28, 2022) where they will gave a plenary invited talk on their work.
