EPS Gero Thomas Medal

The Gero Thomas Award is made annually by the European Physical Society for outstanding contributions to the Society. It commemorates the invaluable service to the European Physical Society given by Gero Thomas during his long term in office as Executive Secretary from 1974 to 1999. It is awarded to and individual who has contributed very considerably to the European Physical Society.

The Gero Thomas Award winner will receive a medal.

Who is eligible ?

  • The winner will be an individual who has contributed very considerably to the European Physical Society.
  • The medal may not be awarded to any person who is a current member of the Executive Committee, nor any person who has been a member of the Executive Committee in the past three years.

How to nominate ?

  • Nominations are invited from, and must be endorsed by, constituent member societies and EPS divisions and interdivisional groups, and Individual Ordinary Members; normally only one candidate will be expected from each constituent society and/or EPS division or interdivisional group or IOM.
  • Nominations, limited to 4 A4 pages and accompanied by 3 supporting statements, should be sent to the EPS Headquarters in Mulhouse (for the attention of the Secretary General).

Key Dates

  • The prize will be awarded annually.
  • The announcement and the award of the Medal will be made at such places and times decided by the Executive Committee.
  • The closing date will be decided by the Executive Committee.

For her strong involvement in the design, construction and running of the very large size time-of-flight detector of the ALICE Experiment at CERN, her important contributions to the development of academic journals and books, her extraordinary commitment to the academia, other science organisations and cooperation in the international physics community, and her outstanding contributions to the European Physical Society including her initiative for the creation of the EPS Historic Sites programme.

Jozef T. Devreese

For his outstanding contributions to a better understanding of physical phenomena in quantum matter including polarons, superconductivity and superfluidity, and structures with reduced dimension and dimensionality. He is also recognised for his dedication to the European Physical Society and his many achievements, including creation of the EPS Condensed Matter Division Conference, and the creation of the EPS Europhysics Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Condensed Matter Physics.

John Enderby

For his lifelong commitment to European collaboration across all fields and groundbreaking neutron research.

2018

Angela Oleandri

For her outstanding and sustained contributions to the development of physics publications in Europe, including her support to the creation and development of the EPJ series of journals and EPL(Europhysics Letters).

Jo Hermans

For his role as Science Editor of Europhysics News and his numerous contributions to education and public understanding of physics.”

Dénes Lajos Nagy

Awarded for his dedication and numerous contributions and commitment to the EPS in the fields of East West relations, and international scientific cooperation.

Gerardo Delgado-Barrio
Awarded for commitment to the EPS in the fields of international scientific cooperation, outreach and education, and physics for development.

2014

Robert Lambourne

Awarded for outstanding contributions to the physics education activities of the EPS

2013

Christine Petit-Jean-Genaz

Awarded for outstanding contributions to the Accelerator Group of the EPS.

2012

Peter Melville

Awarded for outstanding contributions to the EPS.

2011

Claude Sebenne

For his important contribution to the EPS as a member of the Executive Committee and as the Editor of Europhysics News.

2010

Gunnar Tibell

The award recognizes Gunnar Tibell’s wide-ranging and influential activities in the area of physics education (and his efforts to ensure that physics education at all levels was fully supported and represented within the EPS).

2009

Jaroslav Nadrchal

Jaroslav Nadrchal has contributed significantly to the EPS through piloting activities aimed at improving relations among physicists in Eastern and Central European countries with physicists in Western Europe.

2008

George Morrison

G. Morrison actively supported the EPS for over 30 years. As the editor of Europhyscis News, it was transformed into a lively news magazine.

2005

John Lewis

John Lewis made important contributions to the EPS, particularly in his role as Treasurer. He was also instrumental in developing educational activities, including the Malvern Seminar.

2002

Eddy Lingeman

Eddy Lingeman has shown dedication and commitment to the EPS and its goals since its creation. He has been involved in organising workshops, in EPS education activities and in the design and hosting of the EPS website.
